This morning, golden rays illuminated the Tetons to reveal a shimmering cloak of fresh snow. The first snowfall of autumn is the catalyst for change, both in nature and in mindset. It conjures thoughts of last winter and the winter yet to come. Autumn is the season of patient anticipation, nervous excitement, and a visual transition between two beloved seasons. From atop the Bridger Gondola, this transition is apparent in the form of a visual gradient of seasons, available at a glance around the valley. At the heart of it all, the winding, magnificent Snake River endlessly flows and connects all seasons. The once-emerald glow of the valley floor has begun fading to brown. Golden clusters of transitioning trees dot the landscape. Climb higher and see sunbeams perforate the swift, low-flying clouds, quietly creating shadows that cover the foothills and forests. Ascend beyond that and land in a different season entirely.

With a bluebird backdrop, Corbet’s Couloir and the summit of Rendezvous Peak and are dusted in a fresh layer of white, caught in flux between memories of last winter and hopeful, excited thoughts of the season on the horizon. Corbet’s, the precipice resembling a cathedral of stoke and lore, bakes in the afternoon sun. The snowfall melts quietly, as if shrinking back into the rock. North-facing aspects grasp onto this fleeting handhold of winter. The terrain here is familiar, yet unfamiliar simultaneously. Be patient, stay ready. Let that fire burn inside, smoldering until the subsequent snowstorm. Soon, winter will be upon us.
