The holiday season proved to be a month of dramatic shifts in weather and snowpack conditions here at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, with nearly 8 FEET of snow falling in Rendezvous Bowl. Despite a slow start, December delivered a turnaround that redefined early-season skiing and snowboarding. January is off to a deep start, with 3 FEET of snow falling in the first week. Let's dive into the highlights, complete with a photo gallery chronicling a fun-filled month.

January So Far (1/6): More of December's Deepness

Nearly 3 FEET of snow has already fallen this month, giving 2025 the perfect powder-filled start we’ve been dreaming of. Lift lines have been nearly nonexistent as skiers spread out around the mountain to explore the ever-expanding terrain options. Powder days without lengthy, lethargic lift lines? Jackson Hole is where you need to ski to have this kind of experience.

December Snowfall

Mother Nature delivered in a big way last month, but only after a light couple of weeks to begin December. Thanks to enhanced snowmaking infrastructure and low temperatures, our Snowmaking teams became the heroes we needed to provide ample snow coverage across the north side of the mountain. Relief came mid-month, as the first of two massive multi-day storms delivered 40 inches of snow, erasing the woes of a dry start to the season. Jackson Hole powder hounds rejoiced and indulged in the ideal conditions. This pivotal storm allowed Jackson Hole Ski Patrol and Mountain Operations teams to open more lifts and more terrain in swift fashion, including the new Sublette Lift and the iconic Aerial Tram.

After a brief respite of blue skies and shimmering snowy slopes, we re-entered the flow on December 23. From December 23-31, another storm deposited an additional 40 inches of snow. This led to the opening of more advanced terrain, including the Headwall, Hobacks, and Lower Faces. As you can see from the video below, the snow quality was absolutely incredible. By the month’s end, snowfall and snowpack measurements were near or above historical averages across all elevations:

Measurement Location New Snow % Average Snow Depth (12/31) % Average
Rendezvous Bowl 94" 116% 59" 103%
Raymer 87" 100% 62" 109%
Mid-Mountain 77" 106% 48" 95%
Base 35" 104% 21" 100%

By the numbers, December 2024 brought a remarkable turnaround! The 8.9 inches of SWE (snow-water equivalent) at Rendezvous Bowl represented 121% of the 55-year average, while snowfall totals at the base and mid-mountain surpassed 100% of historical averages.

December Celebrations

December 20 marked the long-anticipated opening of the new Sublette lift!

Enormous positive feedback about the new lift has leveled-up skiers' stoke, and a ride time of just four minutes makes lapping "Subby" all the rage this season.

Join us in giving a massive thank you to snowmaking, mountain operations, and Jackson Hole Ski Patrol for all of their efforts to start the year on a high note. Snowmaking teams worked tirelessly each day to blow snow on our slopes and provide an excellent base on the north side of the mountain and beyond. Learn more about the "most dangerous job in the ski industry" below in Gunrunners.

Mountain Operations quickly readied lifts and terrain as snow fell in abundance and Ski Patrol kept guests safe as terrain options expanded rapidly amidst two powerful storm cycles. Their dedicated hard work is imperative to having an optimal experience at JHMR, and we're all extremely grateful to have such incredible teams.

Take a look at the photo gallery below to experience the magic of a snowy December, ordered in reverse-chronological order. We hope to see you out here making turns this month and beyond!
