History Highlights

First Turns

In 1979 on Teton Pass, Robert "RG" Garrett makes the first snowboard turns - the start of a new era.

First Footage

In the early days of snowboarding, Tom Sims showcased the sport’s potential at the Grand National Powder 8’s, becoming one of the first riders to film around Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Check out, "This is Snowboarding" to see some of the first snowboarding at our mountain.

Conquering Corbet's

If you know Jackson Hole, you know Corbet’s Couloir. In 1985, Chris Pappas, a pioneer of snowboarding at JHMR and the resort’s first snowboard instructor, became the first to drop into Corbet’s on a snowboard. Riding without highbacks and wearing Sorels, he didn’t just stop at one run — he went back up and sent it three more times.

Jackson Hole's First Athlete

In 1993, local pro snowboarder, Julie Zell becomes Jackson Hole Mountain Resort's first sponsored athlete - paving the way for a new era of marketing and supporting the snowsports culture.

Hometown Heroes

We are proud to have some heavy-hitters get their start on our mountain, here are just a few to name.

Travis Rice

Let’s be real — Travis is the GOAT. From racking up podiums in competitive riding to dominating big-mountain freeride, he’s constantly raised the bar. Iconic films like The Art of Flight, That’s It, That’s All, and The Fourth Phase cement his legacy, and with Natural Selection, Travis continues to push the limits of what’s possible on a snowboard.

Blake Paul

One of the most stylish riders in the game, Blake's riding makes you want to grab your board and hit the mountain. With standout parts in iconic films like Brown Cinema’s Knights of the Brown Table and Vans’ Landline, his melodic, flowing style has earned him a well-deserved reputation as a household name in snowboarding.

Rob Kingwill

Finding a second home on the podium throughout the ’90s and ’00s, appearing in countless iconic films, and serving as a timeless steward of snowboarding culture, Rob “Kinger” Kingwill is a true legend. We’re grateful for his enduring passion for the sport and proud to have him representing snowboarding on our mountain.
