March 9-15 - Dr. Huckinstuff's weekly recap:
Well, following the full throttle start to March we sorta stutter stepped our way closer to spring this week. After a serious blasting of deep accumulations, the atmosphere decided to take a little bit of a break. With a morning inversion and cool temperatures to start last weekend off, the mountain had a decidedly winter vibe that was reinforced by a snow filled forecast a few days out. Sunshine brought the backcountry back online and the evidence of exploratory moves became visible in all directions. Sunday followed suit with slightly rising temperatures and ever increasing stoke for the next system to arrive. But after the sun-soaked weekend the expected winter weather slowed its roll, failing to materialize as expected during the day on Monday. Despite fizzling a bit, the storm eventually moved in during the evening hours and dropped several effective inches through mid-week. While the snow totals were lighter than initially expected, steady winds helped to etch-a-sketch the off piste palate clean. Notably diminished crowds were evident on the hill while the week progressed, as apparently the atmosphere wasn't the only one that needed rest. For those that die hard and never deviate from their daily dose of stoke, the mellow crowds and tiny snow touch-ups just amplified the incredible vibe. By Thursday the signs of spring were starting to show in force as blazing blue skies combined with warm sunflakes and snowshine, transforming the slopes into a forgiving playground to carve, slash and mash. With the week coming to a close sunglasses and solar bronzed smiles have taken center stage...for now. But the Tetons have a lot of tricks up their sleeves, so don't be surprised if before you know it, we're back to rippin' pow. Looking ahead, we've got one month left and what lies in store is anyone's guess. Don't chance a long summer of regrets. Be the proverbial fool that persists in their folly. It's bound to be worthy because as enlightened skiers know, the greatest run is the one that comes next. -Lege
