With a wrap on one of the snowiest years on record, many would surmise the ski season is over. But for those enlightened few, we know that is entirely untrue. The Aerial Tram opened for summer operations May 20th, and brings with it the return of the spring ski season for those adventurous few.

Let’s reiterate that skiing inside the bounds of the resort is strictly forbidden after winter operations close. But for individuals who ride the Aerial Tram up and walk a few steps out the resort boundary gates into the wild Bridger Teton National Forest  - you are well within your rights to ski or snowboard.
On opening day of the summer, we caught the first tram up at 9 o’clock, becoming one of the 82 adventure enthusiasts who would ski/snowboard from Big Red Saturday. Backpacks brimming with all our ski needs; water & snacks, beacon, shovel, and probe. Skis strapped to the bag, boots securely clipped in, poles in hand we shove off and the adventure began.

Ascending rapidly, the Aerial Tram crests over the valley, views stretching boundlessly in nearly every direction. A quick stop by Corbet's Cabin, with Nutella waffle in hand, we walk out the gate, strap up, and start to ascend! The task can be laborious -the ups always are. The breath-altering toll is nearly forgotten, as the summit emerges, just above the horizon.

Dopamine levels start to dance their summit salsa as the anticipation of skiing, shimmers white in front of your eyes. Standing on top I envision my line -a left and then a right, that’s how it will go.

Skiing in Cody Bowl in the summer

I point my skis straight. The wind rises up to meet me –howling deep in my ear, tugging relentlessly at the ends of the strands of my hair. As I carve my line across the slushy mountain face, the snow sings its sweet song, and that familiar freeing feeling starts to take its iron grip. I howl to the sky, what a way to feel alive. And then all too soon before it’s really begun, I’m at the bottom. The wind dies away and all that remains is that stupid grin plasters across my face.

Now the debate rages inside, as I strap on my skins – Will I do it once again?

Jackson winter bounty will enable skiing for at least the next two weeks. Best to go early, as the snow gets very sticky. There are plenty of hazards as the coverage continues to melt. Hiking/skinning will be mandatory regardless of what missions you are trying to ski, so make sure you prepare accordingly. There are two options: you can hike back to the Aerial Tram and ride it down or you can ski ¾ down the mountain via Rock Springs and hike back to the base. Although skiing down may seem more inviting the easiest way back is via the Aerial Tram. As someone who skied out (hiking several miles in ski boots), I would highly recommend the Aerial Tram ride.
