Caring for Injured

Our patrollers are trained in Outdoor Emergency Care, which is a curriculum developed by the National Ski Patrol. Our medical advisory team is comprised of local emergency room physicians.

Mountain Signage

We erect and maintain directional signs and identify and mark hazards where appropriate. Please observe all area closures. It may not be evident why an area is closed, but terrain can be closed for a variety of reasons.

Avalanche Hazard Mitigation

There are over 200 named avalanche paths within the ski area boundary, in addition to many smaller unnamed paths. The ski patrol is tasked with forecasting and mitigating the avalanche hazard within the ski area prior to opening the mountain for skiers and riders. This is accomplished by firing the seven Gaz-Ex units located on the Headwall, and above Pepi’s Bench and then running avalanche mitigation routes by deploying explosive hand charges while skiing through the terrain.

Safety

This mountain is like nothing you have experienced before. Its terrain presents everything from groomed slopes to dangerous cliffs, and its weather is just as variable. During periods of low visibility or other inclement weather and snow conditions, the degree of difficulty of these runs for each individual may change. It is important to use extra caution to prevent getting lost or making a mistake that could result in serious injury or death. Please protect yourself by obeying all trail signs and markers.

JHSP Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Jackson Hole Ski Patrol Memorial Scholarship Fund is dedicated to providing college scholarships to high school students whose spirit and love of mountain adventure honors the memory of ski patrollers no longer with us.

Search & Rescue

WE RECOMMEND THAT BACKCOUNTRY TRAVELERS HAVE THE APPROPRIATE EQUIPMENT, KNOWLEDGE, A PARTNER, AND A PLAN. IF YOU DON'T KNOW, DON'T GO.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has seven backcountry access gates which provide recreational access to areas outside the ski area operational boundary. Three of the gates access terrain to the South of the ski area, on the National Forest, and the other four access Grand Teton National Park. Much of this terrain has cliffs and steep avalanche prone slopes. None of the ski patrol services available within the ski area are evident outside the boundary. The primary responsibility for rescue in these areas is the backcountry traveler themselves. Additional rescue support is provided by Teton County Search and Rescue (when the rescue is on the Bridger-Teton National Forest) and Grand Teton National Park. The ski patrol trains with these other agencies, and will often assist with these rescues, although our primary duty is to the in-bounds areas.

Ski Patrol Dogs

The Jackson Hole Patrol Dogs are the hardest working canines in the valley. Day in and day out they work alongside ski patrol practicing search and rescue techniques. More than just members of the patrol, these dogs are family members of the patrollers who take care of them. Their individual personalities run wild until playtime is over and work begins.

The Ranger

I never knew Tom Raymer, but I hear his name every day. I work winters for the Jackson Hole Ski Patrol, and each morning during our meeting we are enjoined to hear the snow and wind forecast from the Raymer snow study plot, a staple of our job. One of our primary weather data collecting sites, it lives at 9300 feet, a short hike above what is now the summit of the Bridger Gondola and gateway into Casper Bowl and Ranger Point.

The Unsung Heroes

Just like that the season is wrapping up in just 4 days. When we look back the memories once again are epic. From getting married at the top of Rendezvous Peak to many powder days, we are once again grateful for our season here. With only a couple blog posts left in the season there […]

Threading Needles - JHSP Brings Skier Back to Life

How long does forever last? For Peggy Hays, a visiting skier to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, forever lasted about 15 minutes on March 1st, 2020—the moment her husband dropped on the slope to the second in which he left the scene in a rescue sled with scarcely a pulse. The call came into Ski Patrol […]

Rising Values of the Jackson Hole Dog Program

Ski patrollers are an odd amalgamation. Part professional skier, laborer, explosives specialist, first responder, coach, sex symbol—they wear many hats. So, it makes perfect sense a few patrollers would add avalanche dog trainer to their requisite skill set. And it’s nothing new.
